The University of Minnesota has done it again! Responsible for the introduction of so many excellent apples over the years, including Haralson (1923), Honeygold (1969), State Fair & Sweet 16 (1978), Honeycrisp (1991), Zestar (1998) to name a few and now their newest introduction, "SNOWSWEET"! The Snowswwet apple tree i s so new that few of us have had a chance to taste it. But its flavor is said to be one of its most outstanding features. Apples produced grow consistently to approximately 3", ripen late, 2 weeks after Honeycrisp, with a 70-85% bronze-red blush. Texture is firm and crisp and snow white flesh is very slow to oxidize, making it practical to slice samples ahead that will offer eye appeal and excellent taste later. The Snowsweet apple tree has average resistance to scab and fire blight and grows best in northern U.S., Canada and areas with relatively cold climate. Initially zoned for region 4, it is probable it will gain a zone 3 growing status. |
