Hardiness means the ability of a plant to withstand the cold. Choose plants with a hardiness zone number equal to or lower than the number for your area.

annual minimum temperatures for each zone.
These zones are a general guideline. They do not guarantee the safety of a
crop, nor do they exclude crops from certain zones.
Many factors contribute to the success or failure of a crop including soil
conditions, mild winters, cool summers, and temperature variations within
a zone for example, valley protection or hillside exposure.
